IPL Q & A
What is photorejuvenation?
Photorejuvenation uses Intense Pulse Light (IPL) technology to deliver a broad spectrum of light to the deepest layers of your skin. Using gentle pulses, the light travels through your epidermis, the topmost layer of skin, and down into the deeper layers of your dermis, which contains strong connective tissues.
There, the light is mostly absorbed by melanin, the pigments that give your skin and its flaws their color. Much like other advanced laser technologies, IPL disrupts excess pigment and stimulates the growth of collagen to tighten and refresh underlying skin.
What conditions is IPL used to address?
Photorejuvenation using IPL technology is a safe, effective, and non-invasive way to correct or improve chronic redness, brown spots, and scarring.
In addition to reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving overall skin texture, and tightening your pores, IPL treatments can help diminish the appearance of a wide variety of common skin flaws, including:
- Freckles, age spots, and sun damage
- Rosacea, or excessive flushing
- Broken capillaries and spider veins
- Hyperpigmentation and melasma
- Large, visible pores
- Wrinkles and textural issues
- Shallow acne scars and stretch marks
What is an IPL treatment like?
IPL treatments are quick and provide long-lasting results. Although they can be performed anywhere on your body, the technology isn’t as effective on tanned or darker skin, and most patients need to undergo multiple treatments to see optimal results.
Dr. Thareja performs IPL treatments with the Cynosure Icon™ laser, which is the most advanced IPL technology available. The Icon laser has the only FDA-approved Skintel® melanin reader, a safeguard that’s designed to eliminate the possibility of hyperpigmentation during treatment.
During each treatment session, you’ll wear eye shields to protect your retinas and corneas. The treatment itself can be slightly uncomfortable; most patients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber-band snapping against your skin. If you have a low tolerance for discomfort, Dr. Thareja can apply an anesthetic lotion ahead of time.
Your session may be as short as 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Beautiful skin and a more youthful appearance can usually be achieved in two to four treatments.
Because IPL photorejuvenation treatments have few potential side effects, you can resume your normal activities immediately afterward.
When will I see results?
Immediately after your IPL treatment, you may notice a slight darkening of any unwanted pigmentation. Within a few minutes, you may also begin to see a mild redness around individual brown spots, which will gently peel off within the following days.
Visible blood vessels will diminish or clear in about two weeks, while areas of diffuse flushing or redness will fade gradually, leaving your skin looking clearer and younger.
