Wrinkle Reduction Q & A

How does aging cause wrinkles?

You already know that fine lines and wrinkles appear on your skin as you age, but what is it that causes them to form? The aging process causes your skin to lose some of its natural elasticity and becomes more fragile; it also produces fewer natural oils and becomes drier. When combined, these factors promote the formation of wrinkles.

What else causes wrinkles?

Exposure to sunlight also encourages wrinkling, because ultraviolet light weakens the deep layers of your skin’s connective tissues that are responsible for maintaining strong, flexible skin. Once that support system has begun to break down, you’ll start to see more sagging and wrinkling.

Smoking, which hampers the oxygen-rich blood supply to your epidermis, is another factor that can cause premature skin wrinkles.

A major uncontrollable factor that contributes to wrinkling is muscle use: Routine facial expressions, such as a constant smile or furrowed brow, can eventually lead to the formation of deep wrinkles and creases.

How can I reduce the appearance of wrinkles?

Most wrinkles are either static or dynamic. Static wrinkles, also known as wrinkles at rest, are the ones that are associated with genetics, sun exposure, and chemical exposure, such as smoking or air pollution.

Dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles in motion, are the type caused by facial expressions. The squint lines around your eyes, the worry lines in your forehead, and the crow’s feet that come from smiling all the time — all of these wrinkles all are considered dynamic.

To treat both types of wrinkles, Dr. Thareja uses the state-of-the-art Icon™ laser, a fractional, non-ablative laser that helps improve skin tone, texture, and elasticity.

Although laser resurfacing treatments are most effective for diminishing the appearance of static wrinkles, they can also make dynamic wrinkles less pronounced and help reduce the appearance of scars and other common skin irregularities.

What is the treatment like?

The Icon works by delivering rapid-pulse, precision beams of laser energy deep into the dermis of your skin to stimulate collagen and tighten underlying layers.

During the treatment, you’ll wear eye shields to protect your corneas and retinas from the laser, which emits short pulses as it’s passed over your skin. Although these pulses feel something like small rubber bands snapping against your skin, the sensation is mild and usually well tolerated.

The average laser skin resurfacing treatment lasts for about 30 minutes, but the procedure can last longer than an hour, depending on the extent of your skin damage.

Because the treatment relies on your body’s healing mechanisms to help revitalize your skin, you’ll see optimal results after multiple sessions scheduled over the course of a few weeks.
